Within the first hundred words, this book stretched my heart strings to the limit. I unashamedly had tears from the first page (admittedly I am one of those heart-on-my-sleeve people) and I was irreversibly and fatally caught up in Hope and Vera's story. I had to see it through the end - I couldn't put the book down, and read it in one sitting. Luckily I'm a fast reader. The moments of comic relief are clever, though brief, and I will be haunted by the characters and images from this story, most probably for the rest of my life. Finding a just-born baby in a trash can, kept alive only by the litter of equally-new kittens who have also been thrown away ... I will never get that out of my head, and my heart. The author weaves a dark mystery through the very depths of the human condition, and yet somehow leaves you with a lot of Faith and Hope.Product details

This is a really original story, action-packed and well-written. Its central character is a mute Russian orphan who travels to Chicago pinning all her hopes on an address written on a scrap of paper. In spite of the heart-rending themes, the book never strays into mawkish territory and is perfectly pitched and paced for teen readers.
I read this book a while ago, but the story has stuck with me for a number of reasons a full cast of well-developed characters, an exciting and unique storyline, and the tale is well told. I would recommend this book to young adults (teenage and up due to content), but also to adults. It's a great read.

Completely taken away by it. A complete world, obviously for young adults, but this older adult loved it! Buy it!
An imaginative, fast moving story about two fourteen year old girls, one raised in Chicago and the other in St. Petersburg. Can be enjoyed by Adults as well as Teenagers.
